Chaparral Noam B, Dana H, Sam M Period 6
3
Features -Rainfall is between 10-17 inches annually
- Dry summer makes the chaparral biome susceptible to fires -Plants bark is resistant to fire -Normally borders desert biomes - Majority of animals are nocturnal
4
Climate Chaparrals are less arid than deserts, but are still relatively very low in terms of precipitation, which close to never occurs during summer. For example, here are the average monthly temperatures and precipitation for Los Angeles:
5
Seasonal Information Best time to Visit: May
Summer (June - September): drought, very hot Fall - Early Spring (October - April): rainy season
6
Unique Features -Fires help balance out the living organisms and nonliving organisms -Shrubs are all over chaparral biomes because they can survive on little water -chaparral is a spanish word meaning “shrub oak”
7
Plants & Animals Wild Goat Coyotte Brush Puma Mountain Mahogany Black-tailed Jackrabbit Fairy Duster Golden Jackal Blue Oak Cactus Wren Olive Tree
8
Plant & Animal Adaptations
Plant Adaptations: storing water through thick bark or waxy coverings growing thorns to prevent animals from consuming regeneration after fire Animal Adaptations: agile climbers foraging over larger areas varying diet to include scrubby brushlands
9
Tourism Activities Hunting Biking Camping Off roading Hiking
10
Environmental Issues Due to lack of rainfall, there is a very high fire risk in the chaparral biomes in California Animals are being over hunted Air pollution is a large threat to chaparral biomes near populated areas

Disclaimer Chaparrals are prone to frequent forest fires, which happen spontaneously and spread quickly Just because it’s not a desert doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be well equipped with water and stay hydrated, you dufus! Some chaparrals have hyenas. Watch out for the hyenas. Australian chaparrals have the type of wildlife one would expect from Australia. Beware the Australian animals, they were put there by god to painfully kill you. Chaparral Chaps Inc. is not responsible for any burn, bite, broken body parts, envenomation, or dehydration-induced deaths of any kind
