4 Why make a distinction pathway?
Limited structured time for longitudinal training in QI Scattered QI opportunities may be challenging to independently navigate Lack of structured mentorship may increase the risk of frustration and disengagement with QI

5 Mission Statement This distinction pathway will provide focused, hands-on training and a real-world experience in understanding the science behind systems of health care delivery through: skill building sessions longitudinal committee work participation in a mentored QI project Trainees will experience a customized opportunity to acquire the skills, confidence, and knowledge necessary to begin a journey toward national prominence in QI and Physician Leadership

6 Components Didactic lectures, workshops, and self-paced curriculum
Engagement in QI initiatives Participation in a mentored QI project Presentation of a longitudinal project

7 Engagement in QI Initiatives
Requirement: Formally join a standing hospital committee with endorsement of the committee chair Goals: Gain exposure to committee work and inter-professional relationships in a real-world setting Provide an opportunity to develop skills related to managing clinical work and administrative tasks Broaden leadership style exposure via interacting with leaders at YNHH and WH VA

Expectations: Attend committee meetings and learn to balance clinical and administrative responsibilities Follow minutes and workflow of committee Participate fully in tasks assigned from the committee

Sample Target Committees: DVT/PE Committee- YNHH Lab Formulary Committee- YNHH RL Solutions Committee- YNHH Patient Safety Committee- WHVA Infection Control Committee- WHVA Patient Flow Committee- WHVA Patient Safety Champions Sub-committee- WHVA

10 Participation in a Mentored QI Project
Requirement: Select and work on a longitudinal project Goals: Learn project selection, development, execution, and leadership skills Learn effective and efficient oral presentation and communication skills Experience the realities of a QI project, including but not limited to the frequent failures associated with real-world QI projects

11 Participation in a Mentored QI Project- cont.
Expectations: Identify a longitudinal faculty mentor for a project Design and execute a small project through to completion, investing ~ hours distributed over PGY 2 and PGY 3 years Create an oral presentation or abstract

12 Participation in didactics
Requirement: Attend at least 3 quarterly sessions of a QI and leadership development series Goal: Acquire knowledge and build skills through small group learning

13 What will you gain? Mentored QI project:
First-hand experience and skill development in selecting and progressing through a QI project Committee work: Learn to be an active and meaningful participant in a health care committee Understand how to lead a successful, collaborative, and productive committee Didactics: Acquire strong skills helpful for your committee and project work Build your repertoire in your pursuit for a leadership position in QI or systems redesign in health care
