Amy Greenberg, Scholars Portal, & John Barnett, Ontario Council of University Libraries
2

Collaborate, innovate, deliver
E-resource collections Resource sharing Scholarly communications Professional development/training Scholars Portal digital/technology infrastructure Collaborative Futures shared library services platform
4
Scholars Portal OCUL’s digital/technology infrastructure
Provided via the University of Toronto Libraries Digital preservation (journals, books) Research data management Geospatial data Cloud storage Accessible library materials Resource sharing Virtual reference Always something new on the horizon!
5
Collaborative Futures
Next generation, shared library services platform Shared cataloguing system Discovery layer Electronic resource management Print management and preservation 13 of 21 member libraries participating initially Represents a different way to work together Encourages a shared approach to our work We don’t have to do the same thing 13+ times Frees time for local needs and specializations
6
Timing is everything In discussion since 2014
Procurement process in 2017 Anticipating signed agreement in near future Implementation to be scheduled but likely in Additional 4 libraries may join after initial implementation
7
Digital preservation Scholars Portal Journals – trusted digital repository for OCUL (and perhaps nationally?) Scholars Portal Books – a TDR in progress Research data Historical topographic maps digitization project In the meantime… Books TDR status: framework for preservation workflow in place; have reviewed most licenses; awaiting development capacity. After development we would look to update the TDR documentation as well, which could also occur in the context of the proposed CRKN TDR project.
8
Print management & preservation
Back burner (we can’t do everything!) There’s interest … but need? So far, not as pressing for OCUL Tri Universities Group (aka TUG: Guelph, Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier) Likely to change as libraries have more space demands Collaborative Futures may put this on the front burner
9
A Way Forward: Revisiting Thunder Bay
Thunder Bay Agreement ( ) Agreed upon at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario Low-use and last copy print materials Initial focus: Coordinated print journal retention & collaborative storage Distributed model desirable Challenges Costs No shared system Not all holdings in OCLC

To wrap up...

What’s happened since @Risk North
CRKN: National TDR, merger with Canadiana.org HathiTrust Canadian Members University of Alberta opened a new facility Discussions among U5 LAC-CARL Working Group on Canadian Collective Print Strategy (a direct result of North meeting)
12
