How do waves effect beaches over time?

Deposition Deposition is the process by which rocks, sand and sediment are deposited by the forces of erosion.

Sea Groin A method for preventing beach erosion. They are structures that run along the beach into the sea. Usually made of wood, concrete, or large piles of rock.

Flood Control Flood control refers to all methods used to reduce or prevent the detrimental effects of flood waters. Levees and dams are some methods used to control flooding.

Levees An embankment built to prevent the overflow of a river.

Dams A barrier constructed to hold back water and raise its level.

Beach Reclamation Beach reclamation is simply providing more sand for a beach that is eroding.

Dredging Clean out the bottom of a harbor, river, or other area of water by scooping out mud, sand, weeds, and rubbish with a dredge.

The Challenge Your company, Sandenshorts Engineering has been hired to create and build a structure to prevent beach erosion or to help rebuild a beach that has been eroded.

Guidelines Independently brainstorm two ideas. Draw and label your ideas on the graphic organizer. Share your ideas with your group and decide on a final plan. Draw your team’s design and make a list of materials you will need. Choose materials from the containers that your group can use to build a model of your design. Test your model and improve if necessary. Draw and label your improvement, then test again.
