Do Now Pick up your notebook and locate the rubric stapled to the last page. We will come back to this later in the block. On your Post-it, tell me 3 things that you could have done to improve your Common Interim score. We are 2 weeks away from our Midterms and the end of the quarter. What are 2 goals you can set to help you pass this class with a C or higher?
2
SWBAT explain that every cell of a multicellular organism contains a complete copy of the organism’s DNA explain that the DNA is the same in all cells. label the components of a model of DNA
3
DNA and Heredity DNA Structure and Function - Amoeba Sisters
Module 6
4
DNA and Heredity DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid
DNA is a NUCLEIC ACID One of the “Core Four” organic compounds DNA controls HEREDITY (the inheritance of traits) DNA is passed from parent to offspring DNA is a CODE for making PROTEINS and proteins determine TRAITS
5
Where is your DNA?
6
DNA Structure The monomer (subunit) of DNA is a nucleotide
A nucleotide has 3 parts Sugar (deoxyribose) Phosphate group Nitrogen base There are 2 chains of nucleotides in a DNA molecule
7
DNA Structure The shape of the DNA molecule is a double helix
The “backbone” of the double helix is alternating sugars and phosphates The rungs of the DNA ladder are nitrogen base pairs Nitrogen base pairs are connected by hydrogen bonds
8
DNA Structure There are 4 nitrogen bases in DNA Adenine Thymine
Cytosine Guanine Base pairing is complementary Adenine with Thymine Cytosine with Guanine
9
How is my DNA different from a tree or a frog?
Every living organism has DNA in its cells All DNA has the same basic structure The difference in human DNA, tree DNA, or frog DNA is the sequence of the nitrogen base pairs.
10
SWBAT explain that every cell of a multicellular organism contains a complete copy of the organism’s DNA explain that the DNA is the same in all cells. label the components of a model of DNA
11
Group Activity Kahoot!
12
Independent Activity- Part 1 (10 minutes)
You will grade your own notebook check: Did you start the Common Interim review guide? If yes, give yourself 50 points. Do you have any of the charts or tables complete? Did you answer ALL of the questions required? If yes, give yourself another 50 points. Do you have 7 days of notes? If yes, give yourself 50 points. If you have at least 4 days, give yourself 25 points. Do you have ANY handouts? Amoeba sister worksheets, enzyme exit ticket, foldables? If yes, give yourself 50 points.
13
Independent activity Part 2
You must demonstrate understanding of DNA’s structure and function. You may draw, write a song, act out the process in a group, etc. but you must include: Parts of DNA (phosphate group, deoxyribose sugar, nitrogen base, hydrogen bond) Functions of each part 4 nitrogen bases and their complementary base pair
14
What are the complementary base pairs of DNA?
Exit Ticket What are the complementary base pairs of DNA? What does hydrogen do? What is the purpose of the nucleotide?
