Embedded Quotes Dos & Don’ts
Proper nouns should be capitalized. You may not refer to an author by the first name only; you are not their friend. Magazine and newspaper titles should be capitalized and in italics. You do not have to include the ethos again if the next quote is by the same person. Parenthetical Documentation
Always goes at the end of a sentence with the period after the parenthesis. Only the author’s last name and unlikely a page number If no author, use the article title. Put the title in quotation marks Use only the first word or phrase Must be capitalized Parenthetical Documentation

Any facts should be cited and thus are an embedded quote, not insightful explanation Don’t just paraphrase the quote Ethos is not commentary, ethos should be part of the embedded quote Commentary should serve as a bridge between your main idea and your quote. Connect the two. Commentary isn’t:

Why is this quote important? How does the quote prove your point? Why is your point important? Justify your opinion without using first person. Commentary should answer:

Identify the positive examples of commentary.
The author says that gun rights are important. Everyone one should be for prayer in schools. When people begin to change the bill of rights, civil liberties are destroyed. Teen drivers most likely have the worst driving records due to inexperience, which could be improved if driver’s education began at 15. Identify the positive examples of commentary.
