1 Science Vocab/Warm Ups Q2

2 Vocabulary Notes 7.L.1.1 Single-celled organism-Having or consisting of only one cell. Pertaining to an organism whose functions (eating, movement, reproduction) are all carried out within one cell. Examples are microorganisms such as bacteria and some algae.

3 Multicellular organism-Having or consisting of many cells or more than one cell to perform all vital functions.Examples of organisms that are multicellular are humans, animals and plants. Euglena-a green, single-celled, freshwater organism with a flagellum, sometimes forming a green scum on stagnant (still) water (ponds, swamp, etc). Amoeba-a single-celled animal that catches food and moves about by extending fingerlike projections of protoplasm (Pseudopodia). Amoebas are either free-living (don’t have a host) in damp environments, or parasitic.

4 Volvox- a green, single-celled aquatic organism that forms free-swimming spherical colonies.
Bacteria-a member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms that have cell walls but do not have organelles or an organized (membrane bound) nucleus. Some can cause diseases in humans/animals. Paramecium- a single-celled freshwater animal that has a characteristic slipper like shape and is covered with cilia for movement.

5 Flagellum- a slender threadlike structure, a whip like appendage (i. e
Flagellum- a slender threadlike structure, a whip like appendage (i.e. arm, leg) that enables many single cells, including bacteria to swim.Locomotion Cilia-a short, microscopic, hairlike vibrating structure. Cilia occur in large numbers on the surface of certain cells, causing currents in the surrounding fluid. Locomotion Pseudopodia- a temporary protrusion of the surface of an amoeboid cell for movement and feeding. Locomotion Chlorophyll-a green pigment, present in all green plants and in cyanobacteria, responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis. Eye spot- A small, light-sensitive patch of pigment in certain algae and unicellular organisms.

6 ( Prokaryote- A prokaryote is a single-celled organism that lacks a membrane-bound nucleus, mitochondria, or any other membrane-bound organelle. An example is bacteria. Eukaryote- A eukaryote is any organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other structures enclosed within membranes, such as humans and plants.
