1 The Chanak Crisis September 1922

2 Where is Chanak? Chanak is a small part of Turkey
It is officially an area known as the Dardanelles

3 Why is it important? Following WWI, Turkey became a mandate of Great Britain which was to stay under their control to ensure that it remained demilitarized (as per Versailles) This meant that although it was recognized as an independent country, it was put under the guidance of G.B. Think of it this way: G.B. was its big brother; baby-sitter Turkey was G.B.’s “Bitch Stewie”

4 The Crisis In September of 1922, the Turkish people began to revolt against the British soldiers who occupied the area

5 The Crisis Continues The British wanted to send more troops, including those of the Commonwealth countries That meant Canada was expected to go!

6 The Crisis Continues But Canada said that they would not offer any military support without first asking Parliament Parliament decided not to offer military aid And…… Canada did not help! This was due to Resolution IX Part of the Treaty of Versailles which gave commonwealth countries more autonomy from G.B.

7 The Result Canada says “No”
This was one of the first autonomous military decisions that Canada made post war
