NATIONAL DEWORMING DAY - NDD (February 8, 2018) Private School Engagement in NDD [January 23, 2018] Presented by_________

2 Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH)
Globally more than 200 crore people at risk of STH infections More than 140 crore people are infected More than 30 crore people suffer from severe morbidity In India, more than 22 crore children ( year old) are at risk WHO has declared India to be one of the highest burden countries of STH infections in the world Roundworm Whipworm Hookworm Source: WHO PCT Databank:

3 India has the Highest Burden of Children at Risk of STH Morbidity
India: Endemic for STH (called as parasitic intestinal worms), as per WHO In South East Asia region, 64% of the children who require deworming are from India, 15% from Indonesia and 13% from Bangladesh India accounts for 22 crore children (5-14 years) at STH risk (WHO, 2013) **WHO-SEARO, Report of the Informal Consultation on Scaling up Treatment of Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis in the South-East Asia Region, 2011

4 Children are Most at Risk
School-age children suffer highest intensity and greatest morbidity Children can get worm infections by: Playing outside barefoot Not washing hands before eating food Not washing hands after using the toilet Eating fruits and vegetables without washing them Not keeping food covered, which may result in contamination Open defecation It is important for all children to be dewormed, regardless of socio-economic status or other indicators, as infected children can transmit the infection to others in the community

5 STH Infections: Transmission to Others

6 Health Impact of Worm Infection
Impact of Worms on Children Worm infection poses a serious threat to children’s health, education, and productivity. Worms can make children too sick or tired to concentrate in or attend school. In the long- term this could affect their work potential and wages. The greater the amount of worms in a child, the more symptoms the infected individual will have. Severe infections can cause a range of symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and fatigue. Children with mild infections usually show no symptoms. Anemia Nutritional Impairment Loss of appetite Weakness and Anxiety Stomach ache Nausea and vomiting Diarrhea Blood in Stool

7 Worm Infections: Methods of Prevention and Control
Health Education Sanitation Hygiene Deworming Educate communities to understand the risks of transmission Improve sanitation to limit the spread of the disease Improve personal hygiene habits to limit the spread of disease Use of medication to decrease infection levels

8 Control Worm Infections Through Deworming
Deworming using albendazole (400 mg) chewable tablet is the simplest solution used to treat worm infection Deworming: improves children’s health and nutritional uptake, and capacity to learn; Improves concentration and attendance at School/ AWCs Helps reduce worm infections in community Improves work potential and livelihood opportunity Safe for children and adults Dosage based on age Frequency of deworming based on worm prevalence

9 Albendazole is Safe and Highly Beneficial
The deworming drug (Albendazole 400 mg) is considered an effective and safe drug approved by World Health Organization (WHO) Albendazole is on the list of WHO and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India essential medicines and is effective against a wide range of worms The drug has been through extensive safety testing and used by millions of people worldwide for treating STH Worldwide experience of administering deworming drug confirms that the drugs themselves cause only rare, mild and transient side events which are generally related to degeneration of the worms that have been killed. Albendazole is used as part of mass deworming programs in 60 countries* *Source: Preventive chemotherapy to control soil-transmitted helminth infections in at-risk population groups Guideline, September 2017

10 Albendazole to Treat Worm Infections
Deworming Drug- Albendazole 400 mg (available free-of-cost from Government) Albendazole should be administered to all children aged 1 to 19 in age-specific doses Albendazole is a safe drug for both children and adults and has been used to treat millions of people across the world for parasitic intestinal worms.

11 Albendazole to Treat Worm Infections
Instruct children to chew the tablet completely. Ensure safe drinking water is available. Do not forcefully administer the tablet to any child. Use a spoon to administer one full tablet to the child yourself.

13 Preparations for Management of Adverse Events, if any
What are Adverse Events? Deworming has very few side effects or adverse events reported in children. Events such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and weakness may occur among few children especially those with high worm infections. Any adverse events are temporary and generally can be managed easily at the anganwadi. Albendazole is safe for both children and adults: Albendazole is an easily chewable tablet Choking is not to be considered a serious adverse event and is a medication error. Instruct older children to chew the tablet properly. Ensure safe drinking water is available. Still, if the child chokes on part of the tablet, make the child bend over on your lap and pat the child on the back till the tablet comes out. Take the child to an open and shaded place and allow the child to lie down and rest. Call 108 for any medical assistance Role of the Teacher: Use a spoon to administer Albendazole to the child yourself and not give it to the parents to take home. Inform parents about mild side effects and that it is expected only in children with high worm load. Build confidence in parents that the child will be taken under observation and care if they show any serious side effects. HEALTH SYSTEM WILL BE ON ALERT FOR ANY ASSISTANCE ON NDD and MOP UP DAY. Keep contact numbers of ANM/ nearest health facility handy at schools

14 Objective of National Deworming Day (NDD)
Deworm all children aged 1-19 years (enrolled and non-enrolled) at all schools and anganwadi centres for improved child health, nutritional status, access to education, and quality of life Children aged 6-19 years are dewormed at school Children aged 1-5 years (registered and unregistered) and all out-of-school children (6-19 years) are dewormed at anganwadis

15 Why Deworm All Children on NDD?
WHO recommends “deworming of all school and preschool-age children”, to eliminate infections due to worms in children by 2020 Worm infections can be eliminated by regularly treating at least 75% of all children in endemic areas All children should have access to deworming and benefit to have improved health, education and productivity outcomes Irrespective of type of school (government or private); delay in consent from parents deprives children of the benefits from deworming No child should be forcefully administered the drug

16 Role of Private Schools for Successful NDD
Participation at the State and District level Coordination Committee Meetings Sharing school enrollment, contact database Finalization of training and integrated drug distribution plan for all schools including private schools 2. Ensure attendance of teachers in block level training for NDD February 2018 round to Participate in training and receive key information on drug administration, recording, reporting and adverse event management Receive drugs, IEC and training material Have contact number of adverse event response team and nearby medical officer in-charge Teacher trained for NDD should also impart information to school management and other teachers

17 Role of Private Schools for Successful NDD
Information to parents using different platforms (PTMs, Health activities, Fairs and other activities) Information on significance and need of deworming of child should be given to parents Sharing of positive benefits of deworming on child’s health Building confidence among parents about the program and the safety of drug Motivating the children to ensure maximum attendance on NDD Conduct NDD on February 8, 2018 Drug administration to all children Recording of the administered drugs Timely reporting Encourage children to be present on NDD so that maximum students are benefitted
