HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Greece was under the Turkish bondage for almost 400 years (since 1453). The situation was so unbearable that the Greek people decided to revolt and gain their independence. In 1821 the Greek Revolution of Independence started.

The Greek Revolution lasted until 1827 when the Great Forces decided that it was to their benefit to support the Greek case and an autonomous Greek state be formed.

IOANNIS KAPODISTRIAS: HIS ELECTION
It was then that Ioannis Kapodistrias was elected the first Governor of the Greek state for 7 years.

IOANNIS KAPODISTRIAS Ηis early career
In 1803 he became the secretary of the Ionian commonwealth. In 1811 he was appointed the Secretary of Russia in Vienna. In 1812 the Tsar appointed him Counselor of the State.

In 1813 he was sent to Switzerland to reconciliate the cantons which were in conflict.
In Switzerland he applied the system of Federal States which is valid until today. Thanks to his policy peace was established.

In 1815 the Tsar appointed him Minister of Foreign Affairs in Russia
In 1821 he tried to help the Greek Revolution of Ιndependence exerting strong influence on the Tsar.

In 1827 he was elected the first Governor of the Greek State.
