3 Austria-Hungary gives Serbia a list of demands
Serbia does most of them (they’re scared!) BUT, A-H declares war anyway on July 28, 1914 * Have a “blank check” assurance from Germany to help A-H, no matter what

4 The Alliance System Begins
Serbia’s ally Russia begins to mobilize: move troops (but does NOT declare war, Ger says STOP w/in 12 hours, R – no answer) Aug 1: Germany declares war on Russia Aug 2: Ger enters a secret alliance w/ Ottoman Empire Aug 3: Ger declares war on France Ger gives GB an ultimatum: promise to stay neutral – you have 12 hours to decide Which country started it? Who do we blame?

5 Germany: Knew it was surrounded by enemies & must act fast to win this war
Schlieffen Plan: attack France 1st quickly, then turn to Russia (slower to mobilize) France realized this & put all their troops along border w/Germany

6 Britain was allies w/Belg & this forces Britain to enter the war
Germany asked Belgium (who was neutral – didn’t take sides) if they could pass through Belgium said NO! So, Ger invades Belg GB says STOP invasion w/in 24 hours – don’t Britain was allies w/Belg & this forces Britain to enter the war

7 A huge war has begun! Central Powers: Germany, A-H, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria Allies: Great Britain, Italy, France, Serbia, Russia, Japan Plus – many of these countries have overseas empires who will also have to fight in this war!
