World War One facts WW1 began because the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire was assassinated in 1914. That empire attacked the Serbian Empire. Every country chose a side and WW1 began. Germany invaded Belgium and France so Russia attacked Germany so another country invaded another country so Things got out of control fast.

Fiction 11 Warm-up What would you expect when training to be a soldier. (What activities would you do and why would ‘Drill Sergeants’ yell at you.)

Notes ‘Conscription’ – In 1916 men aged 18 – 41 were forced into the army. By law, they had no choice. (The novel is somewhat vague about the dates but from battles which are mentioned, the following fact is discovered.) 1915 – the year Tommo and Charlie join the army. (WW – 1918) Charlie was forced by the Colonel to join the army, otherwise Molly and his mother would be evicted. Tommo was then affected by ‘propaganda’ (the parade and the old woman calling him a coward). Was Tommo forced or manipulated into joining the army do you think?
