CHAPTER-7 MODERN TRENDS IN PRODUCTION ENGINEERING
2
INTRODUCTION
3
TRENDS IN MANUFACTURING:
JIT WASTE REDUCTION 5S KAIZEN FMS POKA YOKE DMAIC CYCLE BRAIN STORMING SIX SIGMA KANBAN RAPID PROTOTYPING LEAN MANUFACTURING
4
JUST IN TIME MANUFACTURING (JIT)
5
WHAT IS JIT???? It’s a production methodology which aims to improve overall productivity through elimination of waste and which leads to improved quality.
6
Emergence of jit Evolved in Japan after world war II ,as a result of their diminishing market share in auto industry TOYOTA MOTOR COMPANY is the first to implement fully functioning and successful JIT system,in 1970’s.
7
Functioning of jit Involves keeping stock level to the minimum
Stock arrives just in time to be used in production Works best when there is close relationship between manufacturer and supplier Goods are not produced unless firm has an order from the customer No demand no production…
8
Seven wastes of jit Waste of overproduction Waste of waiting
Waste of transportation Waste of processing itself Waste of motion Waste of stocks Waste of making defective products
9
pull type manufacturing
Just in Time (JIT) is a pull system which is also known as Make to Order Production. Pull System means that parts are produced to order and the production is matched with demand for the final assembly of products. In Make to order production system, there is a direct interaction with customers during all the stages but it is expensive during engineering phase..
10
Characteristics of pull type
Direct interaction with customers Production schedule changes with changes in customer order Capacity utilization is lower Capacity requirements planning are critical Shop floor control is critical Distribution is less complicated
11
Push type manuacturing
It is often said that Material Requirements Planning (MRP) is a Push system. In MRP the detailed quantity of raw material required for production is planned. It tells when each item must be ordered and delivered so as to ensure timely delivery. Push type" means Make to Stock in which the production is not based on actual demand. "Push type" is represented by "Make to Stock" (MTS) in which the production is not based on actual demand.
12
Importance of JIT for Improving Productivity of Manufacturing System
JIT receives supplies just in time to be used. JIT produces parts just in time to be made into subassemblies. JIT produces subassemblies just in time to be assembled into finished products. JIT produces and delivers finished products just in time to be sold. JIT is a well integrated system resulted in increase in quality, productivity with zero defects. JIT reducing the level of wasted materials, time and effort involved in production processes. JIT identifying and responding to consumer needs. Its ease of manufacturing Its reduces inventory Its reduces inspection It improves quality continuously. It provides Higher flexibility to production system. It improves customer satisfaction It improves working condition and relation between employees.
