2 The Pirate Way to Student Success
“Students are helped from the start to explore academic and career options, choose a program of study, and develop a plan based on the program maps.” (“What is the ‘Pathways Model?’,” 2018)

3 The Pirate Way to Student Success
Students succeed when they develop and achieve their learning goals. Guided Pathways is an equity based framework for students to succeed in the development and achievement of their learning goals. Peninsula College ensures that all students will have access to resources and support in proportion to their needs and feel respected, connected, and successful in their learning goals.

5 How do we create inescapable engagement?

6 How do we create inescapable engagement?
Hi-tech and hi-touch Transformational vs. transactional Guiding onboarding at point of application Empowering student self-service Operationalizing choice theory Delivering personalized and customized advising at scale Tracking progress and providing interventions Caseload management

7 How do we create inescapable engagement?
Using a student success technology platform to help students move through the four pillars: Clarifying the path Getting students on the path Keeping students on the path, and ensuring learning

9 Smart Guidance (Mobile)
SSMS Pillar 1: Student Smart Guidance (Mobile) Guided Onboarding Customized in-app guidance; proactively nudging students to take action Best-Fit Program Selection Student-initiated program of study and career exploration using their skills and interests Provide curated, intelligent guidance at the most pivotal moments along the college journey, simplifying and structuring student pathways to completion. Academic Planning Smart course selection, scheduling, and registration to get and keep students on path Do we want to add “Term to Term Planning Toolkit” as a 4th item? This would include Student Network, Resource Pages, Quick Polls, Personal To-Dos, Appointment Scheduling Term to Term Planning Toolkit Ongoing guidance and alerts for students to keep them on track toward graduation Slide from EAB

10 Guided Onboarding Keep Applicants On Track and Prevent Enrollment Leakage Onboarding Path The Path helps students navigate the orientation and onboarding process, the most deadline-dense period of college, using digital milestones, step-by-step instructions, and alerts. Items appear in weekly or monthly intervals, allowing students to prioritize the right tasks at the right times. Progress is tracked daily so the Path can provide reminders to students to keep them on track. Alert Notifications Students receive alerts about important tasks or overdue items via text, , or push notifications. Cadence and frequency of the notifications are configured based on the severity of the alert. Path Customizations The Path customizes items a student sees based on demographic and academic data in the SIS, and the student’s interests and needs as indicated in the intake survey. The Path dynamically evolves based on student progress and in-app activity and adapts to students as it learns more. Customizations can be made based on: Student attributes (examples: enrollment status, student type, program, etc.) Student Activity (examples: poll responses, preferences, path items status, etc.) Data tracked in the SIS or collected via the mobile platform can be used for customization Path The path provides a digital set of milestones, step by step instructions, and alerts to guide students through the various phases of college onboarding, beginning just after application and through to enrollment and registration. Path items/ tasks appear in weekly or monthly intervals, allowing students to see what’s most important to complete or start working on during the onboarding process. Progress is tracked daily so the path can provide alerts and reminders to students to keep them on track. Notifications – Text, , Push This component works in the background when students are not using the interface, providing reminders for upcoming tasks on his/ her pathway or alerts for things that are overdue. Cadence and frequency of the notifications are configured based on the severity of the task. (more significant tasks have a higher frequency of reminders, tasks requiring large amounts of time have a more lengthy cadence starting from the due date) Single Source of Truth: All major milestones and to-do’s collected in one place. Intelligent: Automatically updates and customizes milestones for individual student needs. On-Boarding Simplified: Turns the intake process from a maze into a straight line. Mobile-Optimized: Students can access their next-steps on the go with a mobile-optimized interface. Slide from EAB

11 Best-Fit Program Selection
Provide Students with Program Recommendations Based on Personal Inputs Major Explorer The Major Explorer tool simplifies the major selection process, allowing students to make simpler, educated decisions early in their college experience. The Major Explorer survey captures students’ preferred activities, lifestyle preferences, academic goals, career aspirations, and desired fields of study. Based on survey results, the Major Explorer generates customized major recommendations combined with job and career data provided by ONET and BLS for a list of best-fit programs. Career data includes: Job demand (national or state), salary (national or state), typical education required, typical years of experience required, and required skills. Students can save their favorite results, which advisors can then view in their profile. Students can use this tool on their desktop or mobile device. Powerful Algorithm: Combines students’ interests, academic needs and goals to suggest best-fit programs. Side-by-Side Program Comparison: Provides students with key information, including typical courses, developmental requirements based on test scores and career data. Slide from EAB

14 Next Steps: Academic Planning Best Fit Scheduling Strategic Care

15 Academic Planning Slide from EAB
Student Empower Students to Build Their Academic Plan and Track Progress Color Coding: Allows students to easily track course status. Course Planner Structured pathways are sourced from degree maps or academic plan templates created as the pathway for a given program. Pathways are shown as a single list of courses or course electives that will fulfill requirements necessary to earn a degree for a given program. Pathways can also be more flexible, using course group functions, providing more choice but still limiting course selection to a specific pathway. Slide from EAB

16 Academic Planning Con’t
Sequencing and Developmental Requirements The academic planner validates your institution's sequence requirements and alerts students of planned, scheduled, or registered courses that have co-requisite or pre-requisite errors. Navigate assess student placement scores and calculates developmental needs. The academic planner identifies the fastest path to complete developmental course work. Course Scheduling Navigate’s advanced scheduler gives students the ability to filter through numerous course options when trying to plan a semester schedule. It allows students to quickly sort through the available, conflicting, and full course times to build a course schedule. Navigate can auto-generate up to five schedule options based on the students preferred course times, availability, and/or other classes already scheduled.  Slide from EAB
