We provide flu shots, STD testing, and we are ready to respond to any disease outbreak. We protect against environmental hazards. We make sure daycares, lodging facilities, and restaurants are all clean and safe environments. We promote health behaviors. Our staff can provide you with the health information you need to make healthy decisions about exercise, eating right, quitting smoking, and safe sex. We prevent injuries and illness. We work to keep animals and people safe and healthy. We protect people from loose or wild animals. We help you get the health services you need. Our social services staff can help you find the services needed to live a healthy life. Our WIC program provides nutrition support for local women, infants, and children.

Administration Vital Records Public Information
Birth certificates Death certificates – 6994 Domestic Partnerships Registered - 25 Public Information 198 media interactions (2016) Responsible for the overall administration of the department. Responsible for the interface between city and county governments, state and federal public health agencies, and providing the staff support to the Board of Health. Our Public Information Specialist is housed in administration and responsible for assisting in communicating health messages through a variety of channels across the department.

Community health assessment and program evaluation Epidemiology and disease outbreak coordination and response Public Health emergency preparedness Quality improvement Grant writing This unit works hand in hand with administration to monitor diseases and conditions in the community, to lead disease outbreak coordination, and to assist every unit in the department with quality improvement and evaluation activities.

Environmental Public Health
Regulatory Inspections: Food Establishments – 900 Daycares – 155 Lodging – 41 Pools – 159 Tattoo Establishments – 12 County Nuisance Ordinance Enforcement Mosquito Prevention and Control County On-Site Sewage -244 permits Environmental Health is the regulatory arm of the department. Inspections of food facilities, daycares, lodging, and pools are a major focus. The Environmental Public Health Specialists really focus on prevention. Working with the facilities we inspect to help them improve. Mosquito prevention and control is a hot topic right now with Zika, which I plan to cover towards the end. We have had a robust vector control program in place since 2003.

Animal Control Calls for Service – 3004
Human Bites -189 Dangerous/Aggressive Animals – 69 Wildlife – 392 Cruelty Investigations – 406 Dogs Impounded - 519 Animal Control is a public safety related function in city and county government. AC Officers enforce the ordinances and the Central Missouri Humane Society houses and cares for the animals for a 5 day holding period by law through an annual contract. Unclaimed animals are turned over to CMHS for adoption.

Community Health Promotion
HIV Testing and Education Live Well Restaurants Stock Healthy Shop Healthy Community Gardens Worksite Wellness Program Teen Outreach Program (TOP) Fit-Tastic Cooking Matters Program HIV Testing and Education 37 counties- this year we have added rapid Hep C testing and trained 5 new local public health agencies to do rapid HIV/HCV in their own county. Added 5 new restaurants, bringing the total to 24 in Boone County 4 corner stores throughout the county have worked with us and are increasing the amount of healthy foods they have to offer Worksite wellness – partner with the City and CPS. CPS had 389 employees in their first walking challenge. We trained three worksites to offer smoking cessation to their employees. TOP is in 9 schools with 10 after school clubs Fit-tastic 124 kids and their families. Key partners are WIC South Providence Peds, MU Family and Community Medicine, Centro Latino

WIC (Women, Infants and Children)
29,976 visits in 2016 74.5% of our mothers breastfeed Lunch in the Park – 4,193 lunches last summer at Douglass Park Partnered with Project LAUNCH to provide 108 developmental screenings and refer the children with delays to occupational therapy assessments, hearing evaluations and mental health assessments Pregnant and postpartum women and their infants and children through age 5. This is a nutrition education and supplementation program. All participants have a nutrition risk factor and have income under 185% of federal poverty levels. Educational classes are required monthly to be a participant. Our agency has one of the highest rates of breastfeeding moms. This group also coordinate the summer food program funded by the USDA to offer lunch daily in the summer for young people under 18. This program has strong partnership with other agencies to make it happen. Rotarians volunteer their time to help serve lunch. We contract with CPS to make the healthy lunches, Parks and Rec, the Daniel Boone Regional Library are just a few examples of outside groups who come in to create events and learning opportunities for the youth over the lunch hour.

1 full-time communicable disease specialist/lab analyst 1 full-time nursing supervisor (RN) 1 full-time community health manager (NP) 2 part-time NPs Nurses are generalists, but also specialize in an area. All nurses cycle through walk-in and clinical services (immunizations, pregnancy testing, BP/BG screening, birth control method pick up/administration, STD treatment, TB testing and treatment, blood draws, phone calls, results, walk-in questions). Staff Refugee Clinic, Immigration Clinic/Lead Testing, Smoking Cessation Counseling. Each nurse also has a program/project they lead/manage: TB/CD, CCHC & Other Health Education, Smoking Cessation/Prevention, Refugee Services, Immunizations, Health Literacy, Quality Improvement, Lead Case Mgmt.

Communicable Disease Prevention and Control
Children/Adult Immunizations – 19,349 Reportable Disease & Conditions Sexually Transmitted Infections –1,397 Influenza – 782 TB Infection – 132 Active TB Cases – 2 Other Reportable Conditions - 698 This unit is part of our community health division and responsible for the investigation and control of communicable diseases. This is done through coordinating with the health care community and local labs to make sure that cases are reported. Doing contact investigations as needed to make sure that diseases are not spread, and completing state and federal requirements to make sure all reportable diseases are investigated thoroughly and completely. An important part of our communicable disease prevention work focuses on influenza vaccinations. We are really proud of the partnership we have with the Lichtenstein Foundation and MU Health Care to provide free flu shots in the school setting to all children in Boone County schools K-12 both public and private.

Public Health Nursing Services
On-Call Nursing/Education 1,717 tuberculin skin tests placed and read 686 pregnancy tests 70 training hours to childcare facilities Smoking Cessation counseling and patches Nurse taught well baby classes Public Health Nursing Services is a section in our Community Health Division. These highlight just a few of the activities of the staff in addition to immunization activities in the office. There is always a nurse on call available to field calls from the public. They also do a lot of teaching too.

Clinical Preventive Services
2,317 STD clinical visits 238 Refugee Visits 282 Women’s Health Exams Finally, our Clinical Preventive Services, also in our Community Health Division uses nurse practitioners to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted infections, conduct refugee screening exams, a limited amount of women’s health services (including some breast and cervical cancer screening), and exams for our dental pain relief program. We have 2 full time nurse practitioners on staff in the department.
