1 Year 6 SATS Success Tuesday 8th May 2018

2 The 2018 tests The new Primary National Curriculum was introduced in The tests are based on the key objectives from the new curriculum. Some objectives are considerably more challenging and the tests reflect this.

3 End of Key Stage 2 Assessment
Year 6 Assessment comprises 2 parts: Teacher Assessment Teacher assessments are judgements made against a specific set of criteria, the interim framework. We submit our assessments to the Local Authority for each child on: Reading; Speaking and Listening; Writing; Maths and Science.

4 End of Key Stage 2 Assessment
2) SATS The SATS are Statutory Assessment Tests. The children have tests in: Reading; Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Maths

5 The Tests Reading: One one-hour test consisting of 3 or 4 texts and a corresponding answer booklet. The texts get progressively more challenging. (50 marks) SPaG: One short-answer paper, lasting 45 minutes, testing grammar and punctuation, (50 marks); a separate spelling test, (20 marks).

6 The Tests Maths: 3 papers Paper 1: Arithmetic, 30 minutes (40 marks) Paper 2: Reasoning 1, 40 minutes (35 marks) Paper 3: Reasoning 2, 40 minutes (35 marks)

7 2018 SATS The Reading tests changed in 2016 so there is little anticipated change this year. The SPaG test is similar in structure however content is much more challenging. Maths: Arithmetic paper 1 Maths papers 2 and 3. The two reasoning papers are to get increasingly more challenging and expect pupils to apply a number of skills to one question.

8 EXAMPLES-Paper 1 40% of 120 5/6 of 120 6516 ÷ 4 1/5 x 1/12 276 x 82

9 Writing Assessment No formal test to be externally marked
Attainment is based on Teacher Assessments, which are made on-going throughout the year, across different curriculum areas, against the interim framework criteria. Teacher assessments may be moderated externally.

10 REPORTING No Levels! Children are reported as being: -Working towards the expected standard (NS) -Working at the expected standard (AS) -Working at the expected standard in greater depth.

11 Scaled scores The RAW SCORE (number of marks achieved) will be converted into a SCALED SCORE. The purpose of this is to maintain consistency year on year as there may be slight differences in difficulty of the test; the expected number of marks will always equate to 100 on the scaled score, even if the number of marks required to achieve the expected for that test changes. The expected score will not be decided until the children have sat the tests.

12 Transition In the Summer Term, Miss. Dutton and Mrs. Casey meet with the teachers from the Secondary schools the children are moving on to. We give a full picture of each child’s ability, strengths, areas for support, attitude to work and behaviour. We feel this year this is more important than ever, with the descriptors being so broad. We want each child’s strengths to be recognised and for them to receive support where necessary.

13 What we are doing in school…
Giving the children some new-style practise papers so they are familiar with the tests, the layout and the type of questions they will be asked Giving the children practice at working within time limits Giving the children test strategies i.e. What to do if they can’t answer a question...

14 What you can do to help Support children with homework
Regular reading practice; if preparing for a race you would train to improve speed and skills, so the children will benefit from improving speed and developing ideas in response to books: overall themes etc... Look out for interesting vocabulary when reading and look up meaning or ask child to use new words correctly in a sentence. Check they are quick and accurate with times tables. Look at maths around us: measures; time problems; timetables...calculations…
