Biomes Lecture
2
What is a biome? A major type of ecosystem with distinctive temperature, rainfall, and organisms.
3
There are.. Terrestrial Biomes Aquatic Biomes
(75% of Earth’s surface is covered by water)
4
Aquatic Biomes There are many aquatic biomes with different aspects. They may vary by…. Salinity of water (fresh vs. marine) Depth vs. Light Temperature Dissolved Oxygen Levels Much more…
5
Terrestrial Biomes Include:
Tundra Treeless land with usually freezing temperatures. Permafrost
6
Temperate Forest ~Hardwood trees ~4 definitive seasons
*mild-moderate winters *warm summers
7
California’s short shrub community
Chaparral California’s short shrub community Hot, Dry summers Mild winters
8
Most biologically diverse
Tropical Rain Forest Most biologically diverse Warm, wet, humid Lush plant growth.
9
Desert Very dry and little plant life.
Plants must reduce water loss with many types of adaptations.
10
Grassland Large communities covered with grasses and similar small plants. Not enough rain to support forests. Temperate (Prairies, steppes) and Tropical (savanna)
11
Taiga Large mammals. Little warmer than tundra and no permafrost.
Conical-shaped coniferous trees
12
What is weather? The atmospheric conditions over a short period of time, like a day or week. For example, today the weather is cloudy with a chance of rain and a high of 54.
13
What is climate? Climate is the average atmospheric conditions over a longer period of time, like a year. For example, the climate in Florida is much more humid than the climate in Arizona.
14
Controlled by… Latitude Altitude Proximity to Oceans and Mountains
Proportion of land to water
