Buy Now; Impulse Buys, the Psychology Behind it and You
Matthew Mori Buy Now; Impulse Buys, the Psychology Behind it and You Good Morning, my name is Matthew Mori, and this is my science project about Impulse Buys, the Psychology Behind it and You
2
Questions: What is an impulse buy, and the motivation behind said impulse buy? Does the name and focus of a product make the target audience want the product? I have two main questions: What is an impulse buy, and why do people buy impulsively; and does the name and focus of a product make the target audience want the product? The latter of which will be the basis for our experiment.
3
Section I: Impulse Buys
In this Section: What is an Impulse Buy? What Motivates an Impulse Buy (III Parts)? Which brings us to our first Section, which is about impulse buys…
4
What is an Impulse Buy? Impulse Buy – An unplanned decision to buy a product or service, made just before a purchase.
5
What Motivates an Impulse Buy (Part I)
The vast majority of impulse buyers who do it more often, have a gene called “Impulse buying tendency,” and although may seem innocent, here are three main reasons to prove otherwise. The first is that the person with said gene is more social, status-conscious, and more concerned with their image. Therefore the buyer will buy as a way to look good in the eyes of others (friends, family, peers, etc.)
6
What Motivates an Impulse Buy (Part II)
Second, they tend to experience more anxiety than most, causing difficulty in controlling their emotions, which may play a part in making it harder to resist the emotional urges to impulsively spend money Lastly, impulse buyers tend to experience less happiness, so they may buy to increase their mood (materialism)
7
What Motivates an Impulse Buy (Part III)
Overall, all of those three things play a part of motivating an impulse buy, and for the ones who do, are less likely to consider the consequences of their spending (in other words, they just want to have it) the following two bullet points have two extra reasons of the motivation behind impulsively buying: People who shop for fun are more likely to buy impulsively than people who don’t The connection between a consumer and a product (and sometimes the brand/company) can play a huge part as well…
8
5 ways to curb impulse buying
9
Don’t shop impulsively, be like Dave Ramsey, and be smart with your money!
Also, Look at the 7 Baby Steps, remember and follow those steps not just here in High School, but for the rest of your life! They are a helpful resourceful guideline… don’t be afraid to use them!
10
Act II: How this can Effect You
In this Section: How you can buy impulsively even if you are the ”Average Joe,” or the average person.
11
Section Introduction For all of you who think that “I’ll never be drawn into an impulse buy, I’m completely normal,” please, stop thinking magically, as Mr. Kimball would say… because you can still get drawn into an impulse buy, and in the next couple slides, I’ll tell you why and how this can and possibly will, happen to you
12
How? (Part I) Marketing is all about Public Relations, and the ability to advertise, make you want to pick up the phone and call now, "operators are standing by,” or go to the store, and even online, to buy the product You think marketing is easy, it’s far more sophisticated than it is, I could talk all day about what it take to sell a product very, very, smoothly…
13
How? (Part II) Okay, on to the point, and the point is that there is a whole career based on the psychology of consumers, and you can get a whole bunch of money if you make the right moves and be able to persuade the customer to buy, buy, buy!
14
Why? (What Motivates the Seller)
The seller’s motivation is quite obvious, really, and it is probably no surprise too, the Seller’s motivation is capitalism’s most known product, currency/money, and in our case, the dollar (USD)
15
Act III: Experiment In this Section: Experiment (Captain Obvious), and a video showing what you are doing in a nutshell
16
Experiment Gentlemen, I have given you 4 days to prepare your product, give it a name and bring it to life… Now, on the next slide, Gentlemen… begin, one by one, or, if you are in a group, come up with each and every single one of you MUST have a speaking part, that being said… You can begin practicing in the next room… You have no later than four minutes to rehearse, then, you will set up your stage, then present. Good luck!
17
Example of Experiment Sham Wow Commericial (2:01)
18
Section IV: Conclusion

19
The Conclusion Well, here we are, the moment of truth…
What are the results
20
Videos The Psychology of Colour, Emotion and Online Shopping (4:09)
How to Stop Impulse Shopping Habits (4:44)
21
Sources Look up “impulse buying” on Bing images, this certain article from Psychology Today that I have based the some of Section I’s wording from, and YouTube

Also… I’ll give you a sneak peek on the next project in six words: I lied about the sneak peek! [insert evil laugh here] Thank You for Watching!
