5 Agriculture

6 Priority Indicators: Agriculture
Theme Indicator Title Agriculture Change in grain (maize, wheat & barley) production Change in deciduous fruit production Change in other crop production areas

7 Priority Indicators: Agriculture
Theme Indicator Title Agriculture Increased exposure to pests such as eldana, chilo and codling moth Increased risks to livestock (cattle and pigs) Reduced food security Loss of grasslands

8 Responses: Agriculture
Sub-Project: Manage change in grain (maize, wheat & barley) production Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on grain production Research and improve understanding of grain production Conduct research on alternative agricultural production that can be implemented Promote knowledge generation, knowledge sharing and stakeholder participation Implement evidence based monitoring initiatives that feed into management systems Identify climate resilient land-uses that will support the agricultural industry’s efforts to exploit new agricultural opportunities

9 Responses: Agriculture
Sub-Project: Manage the change in deciduous fruit production Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on deciduous fruit Promote knowledge generation, knowledge sharing and stakeholder participation Implement evidence based monitoring initiatives that feed into the management systems for deciduous fruit production Strengthen management plans, to enable continuous monitoring and the ability to effectively respond to the change Identify climate resilient land-uses that will support new agricultural opportunities Generate and share scientific, social and indigenous knowledge

10 Responses: Agriculture
Sub-Project: Manage the Change in other crop production areas Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on crop production Conduct research on alternative agricultural production that can be implemented Promote knowledge generation, knowledge sharing and stakeholder participation Identify climate resilient land-uses that will support new agricultural opportunities

11 Responses: Agriculture
Sub-Project: Manage the increased exposure to pests such as eldana, chilo and codling moth Commission research and improve understanding of CC impacts on pests Promote knowledge generation, knowledge sharing and stakeholder participation Generate and share scientific, social and indigenous knowledge that will mitigate the impacts of pests on farming practices Implement insect monitoring systems and initiatives that feed into the management systems Strengthen management plans to enable continuous monitoring Identify climate resilient land-uses that will reduce exposure to increased pests

12 Responses: Agriculture
Sub-Project: Manage the increased risks to livestock (cattle and pigs) Commission research and improve understanding of CC impacts livestock Generate and share scientific, social and indigenous knowledge Promote knowledge generation, sharing & stakeholder participation Strengthen management plans, to enable continuous monitoring of water and herbage availability for livestock Develop a framework that will assist farmers with adjusting to reduced rainfall Educate farmers on the advantages associated with early detection of diseases in animals

13 Responses: Agriculture
Sub-Project: Manage the reduced food security Conduct a risk assessment of CC on food security for subsistence farmers Identify local responses that will improve food availability Conduct workshops to educate subsistence farmers and business on how to reduce the risk associated with potential CC impacts Develop emergency plans that will assist with responding to CC related impacts such as malnutrition Identify livelihood and economic diversification strategies Collect information on indigenous knowledge which will contribute towards building resilience Identify local responses that will improve food availability for subsistence farmers.

14 Responses: Agriculture
Sub-Project: Manage the Loss of grasslands Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on grasslands Research and improve understanding of ecosystems services Promote knowledge generation, knowledge sharing and stakeholder participation Strengthen management plans on grasslands, to enable effective monitoring and the ability to respond to the change Implement evidence based monitoring initiatives that feed into management systems Incorporate grassland management into planning systems for other sectors

15 Biodiversity and Environment

16 Priority Indicators: Biodiversity and Environment
Theme Indicator Title Biodiversity & Environment Increased heat stress Increased vector borne diseases from spread of flies Increased water borne and communicable diseases (especially bilharzia) Increased air pollution Increased isolation of rural communities

17 Responses: Biodiversity and Environment
Sub-Project: Manage Increased heat stress Identify communities that have the least capacity to respond to increased temperatures Conduct awareness campaigns on the health risks of high temperatures Commission a reliable early warning system to alert communities and industries Introduce, enhance and integrate surveillance systems to monitor changes in climate and climate-related diseases Develop a health data-capturing system that records data both at spatial and temporal scales

18 Responses: Biodiversity and Environment
Sub-Project: Manage Increased vector borne diseases from spread of flies Strengthen information and knowledge of linkages between disease and CC Identify communities that are vulnerable to the spread of vector borne diseases Create awareness programmes on vector borne diseases Develop mechanisms that will enable vulnerable communities to respond to the spread of vector borne diseases Establish adequate stockpiles of medications, medical supplies, assistive devices and other resources that may be required to deal with reported cases of diseases.

19 Responses: Biodiversity and Environment
Sub-Project: Manage Increased air pollution Identify communities that are most vulnerable to increased exposure of air pollutants Reduce the incidence of respiratory diseases and improve air quality through Equip local health facilities to handle the health effects of increased exposure to air pollutants Conduct workshops that equip communities on how to respond to the effects of air pollution Commission reliable air pollution monitoring systems to alert communities on atmospheric conditions Establish adequate stockpiles of medications, medical supplies, assistive devices and other resources

20 Responses: Biodiversity and Environment
Sub-Project: Manage Increased isolation of rural communities Identify alternative access routes to rural communities Identify roads at risk of flooding and erosion and prioritise those for upgrading and maintenance Identify local responses that will reduce isolation of rural communities Build CC resilient road infrastructure that serves as a link for rural areas Implement flooding drainage systems that will reduce impacts on rural roads Develop economic nodes and improved service provision in rural areas to improve connectivity

21 Water

22 Priority Indicators: Water
Theme Indicator Title Water Decreased quality of drinking water Decreased water quality in ecosystems Increased impacts of flooding from litter blocking sewer system

23 Responses: Water Sub-Project: Manage Decreased quality of drinking water Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on water quality Adopt and enforce simple, innovative, adaptive engineering approaches to water treatment Incorporate projected CC impacts into the planning of municipal water supply Identify and implement innovative groundwater monitoring initiatives that will indicate change and variability in water salinity Prioritise and allocate resources to adaptation interventions that will minimise the pollution of drinking water

24 Responses: Water Sub-Project: Manage decreased water quality in ecosystems Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on water quality Conduct a CC impacts assessment on health risks to aquatic systems Strengthen management plans on wastewater treatment, to enable the ability to respond to the declining water reserves Adopt and enforce simple, innovative and adaptive engineering approaches to wastewater treatment initiatives Identify and implement wastewater monitoring initiatives that will indicate risks to aquatic systems Create an awareness on the reuse of wastewater thus minimising negative impacts of wastewater on aquatic systems

25 Responses: Water Sub-Project: Manage Increased impacts of flooding from litter blocking sewer system Conduct an impact assessment of CC induced litter and debris Retrofit and modify existing water and sanitation using adaptive engineering approaches Build CC resilient drainage infrastructure Commission a risk-averse approach to water quality protection by imposing stringent controls on water polluting land uses and activities Incorporate the possibility of extreme water-related climate change events into the planning of the provision of basic services
