How? How was German Expressionism a reaction to World War I? While the movement emerged before the war began, it evolved to show the dark side of the human mind and a sense of despair. For German artists, many of whom served in WWI, it was a reaction to the suffering and humiliation they endured.

In 1994 Edvard Munch's famous painting The Scream was stolen from a Norwegian art museum. It was recovered in a daring undercover operation by British detectives. Charles Hill was one of those detectives who posed as an art dealer to trick the thieves into returning the painting
