2 The Rise of Greek City States
City-state: a political unit made up of a city and its surrounding areas.0

4 A.) Governing City-States
Up to 750 B.C.- Monarchy rule (king or queen). Thought to be “god-like”. Evolved into an aristocracy: wealthy landowners and military defenders.* Trade expanded, and merchants, farmers, and artisans became the ruling middle class.

5 Changes in Warfare Iron weapons became cheaper, and ordinary citizens joined the armies. Military life was “glorified”. Led to the emergence of the two greatest city-states: Athens and Sparta. By 500 B.C., Athens was the wealthiest city-state. Philosophers (“lovers of wisdom”) like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle contributed to a new form of government: power of the people.
