3 Rational Numbers A rational number is:
Any number that can be written as a ratio (or fraction) Rational numbers include fractions, terminating and repeating decimals, ratios, and percents.

4 Switching between Fractions and Decimals
It is important to be able to express rational numbers as both fractions and decimals. Ex: ½ = 0.5 We will use the TOGGLE button on the calculator to help us convert between the two.

5 Equivalent Rational Numbers
Until the 21st century, stock prices were recorded as fractions. Today, those prices are shown as decimals. For example a gain of $2.25 per share used to be recorded as 2 ¼. How can a loss of 5/8 per share be recorded as a decimal?

When comparing decimals, write one number under the other with the place values line up. Compare the digits in each place-value position, moving right.
