2 Capture of Richmond Grant battled Lee on and off for six weeks
Both sides took massive losses Grant pushes Lee to the Confederate capital at Richmond Grant lays siege to the city and cuts it off from rest of Confederacy Confederates were determined but had no supplies

3 Appomattox Courthouse
Grant was able to take Richmond Lee’s army escapes and makes it to Appomattox, Virginia before being caught Lee surrendered his army of Northern Virginia to Grant ending the war Lee and his army were allowed to make their way home and were even given food for the journey Appomattox Courthouse

4 Lincoln’s Assassination
Five days following Lee’s surrender, Lincoln saw a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington DC During the play, Southern sympathizer and actor John Wilkes Booth sneaks into Lincoln’s box and shoots Lincoln in the head Lincoln dies the next day Lincoln’s death signals that the Confederate hopes of a peaceful reunion is over

Billions of dollars were spent on the war Life loss Roughly 640,000 soldiers died in the Civil War 2/3 from disease and infection Property Damage Major damage in the South where war took place Sherman’s March to the Sea
