1 Getting Shaken by Earthquakes
Plate Tectonics Shaping our Crust: Volcanoes and Earthquakes

2 Objectives Explain how movement along Earth faults release energy to cause Earthquakes Describe and model the type of energy waves produced during an Earthquake

3 What is an Earthquake A sudden and violent shaking and release of energy in Earth’s Crust. Causes of Earthquakes Plate Movement Along fault zones In volcanic regions or other man-made explosion Earthquake occur along plate boundaries along faults volcanic regions.

4 What is a fault? A natural break or crack that make up Earth’s crust, along which rocks have moved relative to one another

5 Slinky Seismic Wave Lab
For this lab, the slinky is not a toy! Make sure not to drop it or get it tangled up Make sure you answer all questions in complete sentences

6 Slinky Seismic Wave Lab
Jobs at your group: 2 slinky holders Observer (start and stop) Timer and Recorder

7 Types of Waves: P – Waves
The fastest and first energy (seismic) wave Can move through solid rocks and liquids Move in a straight push and pull motion People can’t feel this wave

8 Types of Waves: S – Waves
Second energy (seismic) wave; slower than p-wave Can only move through solids Moves side to side People can feel this wave

9 Types of Waves: Surface – Waves
Slowest and last and many energy (seismic) wave Form when P and S waves reach surface Moves up and down and rolls Waves that people feel and are most dangerous

10 Anatomy of an Earthquake
Epicenter – location above the focus of an earthquake on the surface Focus – area of slippage on a fault below the surface where the earthquake happens
