Module 3 :Lesson 3.1 Understanding Rational Exponents and Radicals
Lesson Performance Task: Carbon-14 dating is used to determine the age of archeological artifacts of biological origin, such bone, wood, or plant fibers. This method works by determining the fraction of Carbon-14 that remains in an object and can be expressed as Where t is the length of time in years since the organism died. We’ll look at this further once we understand rational exponents better.

Rules of Exponents
5
Changing From Radical Form to Exponential Form and Vice Versa
6
Change each from radical notation to exponential notation or vice versa.
The rule when you have an exponent raised to an exponent is to multiple exponents.
7
You Try
8
Elaborate: Why can you evaluate an odd index with any radicand, but an even index requires a nonnegative radicand?
10
What percent of Carbon-14 would you expect to find in a sample that was
5,700 years 11,400 years 17,100 years Why do you suppose 5,700 years is called the “half life” of Carbon-14?
