Figure Regulation of blood glucose levels by glucagon and insulin in healthy individuals. In healthy individuals, glucagon and insulin work together to maintain normal plasma glucose levels. During hyperglycemia, pancreatic beta (β) cells release insulin, which stimulates glucose uptake by energy-consuming cells and the formation of glycogen in the liver. During hypoglycemia, pancreatic alpha (α) cells release glucagon, which stimulates gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis in the liver and the release of glucose to the plasma.
