What is light?
3
What is light? Electromagnetic Radiation/Energy Wave-particle duality
It is both a wave and a particle at the same time “Packet” of light energy is a photon
4
What is color? You perceive something as being a certain color because that is the light the object is reflecting.
5
Color Black shirts are hot in the summer because black objects absorb all color frequencies. White shirts are cool in the summer because white objects reflect all color frequencies. Clear objects do not reflect light back at you.

Bill Nye: Light and Color
7
Intro to the Electromagnetic Spectrum
8
Electromagnetic Spectrum
(Light)
9
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Light is not just what we can see Refers to all forms of EM radiation
10
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Transverse Waves Do not need a medium All forms travel at the same velocity About 300,000 m/s in the vacuum of space Travel much faster than sound
11
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Higher Frequencies = Higher Energy Lower Wavelengths = Higher Energy
12
Some Uses of EMS
13
Photoelectric Effect Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize in 1921 for the discovery As a light ray hits the surface of a material, it can knock electrons out This movement of electrons can generate electricity How solar panels work
