A five-year community effort to improve Earth literacy and build a workforce prepared to tackle environmental and resource issues InTeGrate supports integrated interdisciplinary learning about resource and environmental issues across the undergraduate curriculum to create a sustainable and just civilization. What is InTeGrate Like An NSF STEP Center DUE

A Systems Model for Transformation of Individuals, Institutions, and the Geoscience Community
Materials Development Implementation Programs Assessment Program Evaluation Professional Development Website, Project Office Three views of how to change undergraduate education don’t know about or how to do – problem is learning about it enough to transform Materials limited – takes time to make the stuff you need to teach this way; no textbooks; hard to get from data to activity that students can do with data – if we build it will they come; culture of creation Problem is at the institutional level – can’t teach this stuff in existing programs, no rewards, - problem, if adminstration leads will faculty follow? Faculty as resources PD builds on Cutting Edge and Building Strong Departments – culture of sharing at both course and program level; transforming attitude and approach (student centered learning informed by research; department as a team that plans and works together to address and shape goals of institution. Other two pieces are new to me and new at this scale: Team based materials development, testing and publication at a large scale (150 faculty); implementation program development and testing (26 programs). Addresses need to support doing after learning required both learning and implementation

Strengthening Earth Science in Teacher Preparation – A Leveraged InTeGrate Target
Materials for teacher preparation Materials for infusing Earth Science across curriculum Developed by interinstitutional-interdisciplinary teams Reviewed and tested for pedagogic effectiveness

Instructors’ Department Disciplines (n=438)
Courses Using ITG Materials Includes 438 instructors teaching 718 courses in 10 department disciplines in 45 states 85 1–5 6-10 11-20 21-30 31-40 41-50 51-60 61-70 Same set of data as slide 6 - Based on a combination of a “teaching_materials_project” export completed on 1/18 and the results of the REACH survey. 4X number involved in authoring – most materials not yet available. Interdisciplinary reach --- earth across curriculum is a big win for this project. Most schools don’t have geo departments, most students don’t take geo.
