Movie Essay: 15 more minutes
INTRO. 3 BODY PARAGRAPHS: the dangers to animals seen in the film (major threats to biodiversity), potential solutions to take themselves or that others or other groups should take to help reduce biodiversity loss, and personal opinions from the film or its message CONCLUSION Finishing early: You may ask to check your points from last week. Get up silently.

Intro to earth science Checks for Understanding Team Building Time? Summary/ Feedback/ Questions
5
Intro. to Earth Science - Vocab
Earth Science -(also known as geoscience) includes sciences related to the planet Earth, including geology, geophysics, hydrology, meteorology, physical geography, oceanography, and soil science. What’s the purpose or motivation for studying or pursuing earth science? What could be a potential struggle in studying it?
6
Intro. to Earth Science – People
Review: James Hutton, Georges Cuvier, Charles Lyell
7
Remember: Which person’s theory do you agree with more? Why?
Georges Cuvier: Earth's features are mostly accounted for by violent, large-scale events that occurred in a relatively short amount of time. (Catastrophism) James Hutton: The earth is constantly changing and forming and has been for billions of years (Uniformitarianism)
8
HOT questions If you could travel back in time to talk to any one of these scientists, who would you pick? What would you ask them and why? CFO: Who believed Earth changed slowly? Cuvier Hutton Lyell Someone else
9
Intro. to Earth Science – Main Ideas
Materials Rocks, Soil, Minerals, Gases, Water, Light Processes to shape the earth Tectonic plates, subduction zones, volcanic activity Recycling Decomposition, water /nitrogen/carbon cycles Weather and Climate patterns Pressures on living things
10
CFO: The following are main ideas of earth science:
Materials, Cycles, and Volcanoes Mountains forming, the atmosphere, and space The oceans, the atmosphere, and the earth None of the above
11
Intro. to Earth Science – “the spheres”
1. Lithosphere Land Where volcanoes release particles that change the atmosphere 2. Biosphere Life Plants change the lithosphere and atmosphere 3. Hydrosphere Water Oceans affect atmospheric temperature and rivers shape the lithosphere 4. Atmosphere “Sky” Precipitation changes the lithosphere
12
CFO: Which has to deal with the surface of the earth? Lithosphere
Biosphere Hydrosphere Atmosphere Which has to deal with the water and oceans on the planet?
13
Things to think/write about…
Why do you think it is taking scientists so long to figure out how these things work? What could you invent to help discover more about the lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, or atmosphere?
14
Team Building Monday Students are lined up in the classroom and each given an animal to portray. Students must organize themselves alphabetically without making any sounds. Students may only trade places 2 at a time and they may only switch places with a direct neighbor. Breaking rules = restart!
15
Last Items/ Questions HW:
Organize/Purchase science folder due Monday Students may research natural gas drilling for extra background knowledge, if desired, for Friday Extra Credit for students to collect, organize, and classify own rock collection due next Monday 1/18 Think about your progress and effort in the first week. Is this how you want to start?
