2. NCDs – The Epidemiological Frankenstein
By 2030, globally NCDs are projected to account for 72 to 89% of deaths in different regions of the world (WHO, 2015; updated in January 2017);
NCDs like IHD, Stroke, LRTI and COPD have remained amongst the top 10 causes of death over the last 15 years (WHO, 2015; updated in January 2017);
NCDs are expected to cost the developing world $ 21 trillion over the next two decades (David Bloom et al., The Global Economic Burden of Non-communicable Diseases, Geneva: World Economic Forum, 2011);

3. What can be done?
The Framingham study has established that early identification, control of risk factors and follow of clinical protocols can reduce the mortality risk of NCDs like CVD by more than 50% (1948 to 2003, Framingham, Massachusetts);
According to The World Bank, more than half of the NCD burden can be avoided by controlling common risk factors like tobacco & alcohol use, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet (World Bank, Growing Danger of Non-communicable Diseases, Washington, DC, 2011);
Awareness build-up on signs and symptoms can play a key role in early identification and management of NCDs;

The role of mobile health (mHealth) in chronic disease management is gaining popularity across the globe;
As of 2012, over 30,000 mHealth applications are available in the iTunes Google app stores;
What is lacking is an integrated approach linking the stakeholders in use of such mHealth applications;
