What is your key message? Focus. Is the content useful and exciting? To whom? Context is everything. Make it easy to grasp Share your research

4 #1 What is your message? Identify your single most important message. Have you: Contributed significantly to resolving a long-standing problem Developed novel concepts or new techniques Brought disciplines together in a productive way Generated a community resource Proposed the basis for major changes in policy or practice Been highly influential on processes, product and management Tip: Context is everything – make sure you understand where your research sits in the field.

What is your key message? Make it easy to grasp Write a good abstract. Present the arguments logically. Appeal to an audience outside your subfield. Share your research

6 #2.1 Write a good abstract Three main ingredients:
I. What (big) problem are you trying to solve? II. What have you done? III. Why should anyone care?

7 #2.2 Tell a good story It must express: What’s the big question?
How have you advanced the field? Focus on one message only. What is the state of the art? Provide context for your advance. What’s special about you? Identify your audience(s). Why should anyone care? Address any caveats/limitations It must also: Inspire confidence: a strong publication has originality, significance and rigour Be well-written and accessible beyond sub-specialism. A good story does not write itself so take the time to do it well. Tip: Find a critical friend. Ask them to review your work. Be that critical friend.x

9 Tip: engage widely with editors, and don’t miss opportunities

Share your research Make yourself & your work more visible: Take your paper apart and share it in bits: data, figures, software, etc Open an ORCID account Improve your website Make use of social media for: Professional networking Engagement (funders, collaborators, editors, peers) Self promotion Track your citations/mentions Tip: engage widely with editors, and don’t miss opportunities
