2. How can you tell if an answer will be positive or negative?
Multiplying or dividing a pair of negative numbers gives a positive answer so…(-96.7)(56)(-76)(-5)(-346) will be positive because there are two pairs of negative numbers.
Adding a pair of negative numbers is always negative so… (-13.4) is negative.
Subtracting a bigger number from a smaller number is always negative so…1.2 – 567 is negative
And remember (-13.4) is the same as -10 – 13.4 just as 1.2 – 567 is the same as

3. Is the answer positive, negative or neither ? Do not calculate!
The purpose of this exercise is to give students power over the calculator. They continuously make mistakes inputting signs and thus get the wrong sign at the end. Insist that they check the sign before calculating.

4. How can you tell if a fraction is bigger, smaller or equal to ½?
Double the numerator (top of fraction) and compare it to the denominator (bottom of fraction).
If double the numerator is bigger than the denominator then the fraction is bigger than one-half.
For example, in ⅜, double 3 is 6 which is smaller than 8 so ⅜ is smaller than ½ whereas ⅝ is bigger than ½ because double 5 is bigger than 8. And of course 4/8 is equal to ½ because double 4 equals 8.

6. How do you know if an answer is even or odd?
When multiplying any amount of integers as long as one is even the answer will be even. So …. (432)(345)(-5)(244) is even because 432 is even.
When adding or subtracting two odd or two even integers the answer will always be even. So… or 44 – 2386 will be even because the first pair is odd and the second even.
When adding an odd and an even integer the answer will always be odd.
