1 Anatomical Orientation and Terms

2 ANATOMICAL PLANES PLANE – imaginary line

3 ANATOMICAL PLANES SAGITTAL – lengthwise plane dividing the body into right and left parts

4 ANATOMICAL PLANES MIDSAGITTAL – lengthwise plane along the midline dividing the body into equal right and left parts

5 FRONTAL – lengthwise plane that divides the body into
ANATOMICAL PLANES FRONTAL – lengthwise plane that divides the body into dorsal and ventral (superior and inferior) parts

6 TRANSVERSE – horizontal plane that divides the body into
ANATOMICAL PLANES TRANSVERSE – horizontal plane that divides the body into cranial and caudal (anterior and posterior) parts

7 ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION
Dorsal = The upper surface or back Ventral = The underside or front

8 ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION
Superior Inferior Superior = Toward the upper (dorsal) body part Inferior = Toward the under (ventral) body part

9 ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION
Anterior = In front of, toward the head Posterior = Toward the tail or rear end

10 ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION
Caudal Cranial Cranial = Toward the head Caudal = Toward the tail

11 ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION
Medial = Toward the midline Lateral = Away from the midline

12 ANATOMICAL ORIENTATION
Proximal = Closest to the point of attachment Distal = Farthest from the point of attachment
