3 Expectations for Studying Religion
You don’t have to agree with everything you hear, but you do have to try to understand other religions. Be respectful toward other beliefs and customs. Share your knowledge.

4 Hinduism is Very Old! Maybe started 3,000 BCE.
The Rig Vedas were written around BCE. Language was ancient Sanskrit.

5 Polytheism Poly = many Theism = belief in god Poly + theism = belief that there are many gods

People are reborn after they die. Life is an endless cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth.

13 The Hindu Caste System Brahmans = priests
Purusha was a cosmic man who was sarcrificed to create all life. His body was torn into pieces to create the human race. This created a social structure in Hindu society. Kshatriya = warriors Vaishya = merchants Shudra = peasants Dalits = untouchables

14 Karma affects Samsara After each life, a soul moves up or down depending on how the person lived his/her life. Living a good life gives someone higher status in his/her next life so they move into a higher caste.

15 Follow Up Some Hindu’s wear white lines called Tilaka to show who they follow: V shape = Vishnu 3 lines = Shiva Red dot on forehead is called a bindi. It is worn for many reasons, such as showing the “seat of reason” in the body.

16 Swastika in Hinduism The symbol was used in India for thousands of years before the Nazis started using it. Symbol that protects against evil.

Holi Festival of Color!! Redmond celebrates the arrival of Spring #komonews A Hindu spring festival also known as the "festival of colors" or the "festival of love". The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. It is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.
