What type of government does England have today? Henry IV- French throne 1589

Henry IV- French throne 1589
He was the first monarch of the new royal house the Bourbons. Protestant- converts to Catholicism- to bring peace and unity to France.

Henry IV Edict of Nantes (Nants) - guaranteed freedom of worship and political rights and ended the religious wars. Nobles had worked to weaken Central Government, He worked to control the nobility and regain power.

Taxation Many members of Nobles, Clergy were exempt.
Unfairly distributed. People in large cities were exempt from royal taxes. Taxed most were middle and lower classes Couldn’t fix the problem Did figure out a way where money would come back to improve industry and trade. What would you do if you were the lower class?

Huguenots They were a member of the Reformed or Calvinistic communion of France in the 16th and 17th centuries; a French Protestant. Lived in fortified cities that were like states inside of states Richelieu led armies to attack them. After only a year they would give up They could hold political positions They could practice their religion Had to give up their rights for their special fortified cities.

Richelieu Created a centralized government
Intendants- monarchy’s representatives in the providences. Took away administrative positions, financial power from regional governors.

France- stayed out of the war directly gained strength What are some other reasons that would make France want to stay out of the war? Eventually they would join

Most important nobles had to live in Versailles Kept an Eye on them The other monarchs would follow in his footsteps Took the sun as his symbol- rays reached far and wide, just like his power.
