Read pages 88-89 Define Social Contract Natural Rights Copy the blue chart at the bottom of page 89

5 Enlightenment Thinkers
NAME YEARS LIVED BELIEFS Thomas Hobbes People agree to be ruled because their ruler pledges to protect their rights. John Locke People have rights to life, liberty, and property that the government must protect for the common good. Baron de Montesquieu Separate the parts of government so no one part can become too powerful Voltaire People have the right to speak freely, and this right should be defended by everyone. Jean-Jacques Rousseau The legislative power belongs to the people.

Magna Carta Parliament/Common Law English Bill of Rights

9 Magna Carta 1215 – Nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta
Forbade him from taxing without consent Gave free men certain rights; equal treatment and trial by jury Gave nobles the right to rebel if agreement was broken.

10 Parliament/Common Law
Parliament was a group of noblemen that would provide advice to the king. They assisted with making laws. Common Law is the basic laws that all men had to follow.

11 English Bill of Rights Rules set by Parliament that the King had to obey. Look at the English Bill of Rights on page 87. List 3-5 of the rights listed that are also a part of the American Bill of Rights

English nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta limiting the monarch’s power. How do you think this affected future monarchs?

Kick off: After yesterday’s lesson on the Early English Influences how do you think the early colonial governments were set up?

15 Jamestown and Plymouth
Read pages 90-91 Jamestown What was the Virginia House of Burgesses? What did they do? Plymouth List the topics covered in the Mayflower Compact. On a separate paper Create a Venn Diagram that provides 4 differences and 4 similarities between the two settlements.

48 delegates met in Philadelphia. All educated white men Discussed if independence was a good idea and if they should have a republic or a monarchy. By signing the document they were committing treason – a crime punishable by death. Ben Franklin said “We must all hang together or we will hang separately.”

The Magna Carta demanded certain rights be given to the people. The Declaration told the king of the rights that the colonists felt were being violated. Create a comparison chart comparing these 2 documents to each other. There should be at least 5 facts in each section of the chart.
