2 Introduction Selecting and populating an IR product 4 P’s:
Policies and Procedures Publicity and Promotion New Roles for Librarians New Partnerships, New Languages Opportunities for advocacy - promoting OA in Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarship 2.0 We want to talk about the unique opportunities we have as academic libraries within our institutions by expanding our role in publishing. Publishing means different things to different people, but in this case we are talking about making scholarship accessible, primarily in open access environment, but it isn’t limited to that. It is enabling scholarship to become accessible to others with support from the library. Each of us may not focus on all of these issues, but we will provide examples from our individual experiences that we hope will touch upon some of these opportunities. Our order will be to talk from a small college perspective, from small colleges working as a consortium, to a large university. 3 We implemented the DigitalCommons in Spring 2005.
Our digital projects are managed by a steering group on campus of librarians and IT staff. When we began we had a specific project in mind, which was to digitize our student Honors projects. The print form is stored in Archives; limited access; appointment only; no archivist. Outsourcing worked for us because we didn’t have capability of doing it with an open source product Digital Commons was a perfect opportunity to start a pilot project for managing campus wide access to Honors Projects in a digital format Faculty quote on our main page – support for OA – “This is an important way of sharing your insights with the broader scholarly community (and it is another way of giving back - and moving away from a model of extractive research). “ Student projects also provide a measure use of resources that the library provides – a record of what is being utilized for student research. With the implementation of DigitalCommons, we were also able to provide a publishing platform for student peer-reviewed journals. Within a year of bringing up the DC, started a conversation with Philosophy Dept. to “digitize” their journal. That was the beginning of expanding our publishing efforts. Born print to born digital Macalester Journal of Philosophy – print student peer-reviewed journal Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity and Classics (Classics Department) – born digital Today 4 student journals 2 IGC publications Campus alumni magazine One scholarly society journal – faculty editor In Progress – OA book, pilot project – partnership with CST Peer reviewed journals have been popular with faculty. In addition to the platform which provides for submitting electronically, assigning editors, keeping track of status, and uploading finished edited product – other features include

Highlighted papers also help in promoting individual works Focus on student work – high quality and these students are doing work at a graduate student level - working closely with faculty advisors Students are also the future scholars and we have opportunities to introduce them to concepts of scholarly communication including OA intellectual property issues, and their rights as authors An interesting conversation ensued when students balked at putting their honors projects “out there” where someone could “steal their work” and we were able to educate them on how by publishing, it creates a date stamp which provides a record of the date there work is produced and “published” Which leads to talking about policies [next slide] ACRL 14th National Conference-Pushing the Edge: Explore, Engage, Extend-March 12-15, 2009; Seattle, WA

8 Policies, Procedures - FAQs
FAQs tab provides links to our policies and procedures – recently revised as of this week to read Policies/FAQ Critical issue was making sure students and faculty knew this was a permanent collection. Lessons learned – still need more policies – faculty interested in adding new journals – need to have a procedure in place Policies already existed that required students to sign a form providing access to their Honors projects – all are catalogued on OCLC, ILL permission Followed up with a policy to stipulate – permanent nature of the collection – once in, we won’t remove; may hide link if for a specific reason Arranged for some depts. to have campus-only access (sciences) Twice annual sessions with Honors students and we provide explanation of policies, procedures, and OA issues Faculty awareness – see our DC main page for commentary by our faculty – early adopters who are promoting the DC for us Creative Commons license – hope to make the default Opt out versus opt in – future goal Promotion has been in the form of workshops for students and presentations to faculty in various forums. The key feature for us has been focusing on student publications. Important to note that although a 4 year undergraduate, students doing graduate level research. Requests for publishing in book format some of our articles. Coming up – a book length project for a faculty emeritus. Proceeding cautiously because we don’t have a “University Press” on campus. Working on policy with Provost. More journal requests – formulating a policy. By publishing these works, we feel we are enabling scholarship to be found and used by scholars. Calling attention to work by faculty and students and using opportunities to promote OA and call attention to scholarly communication issues. 21 New ways to disseminate humanities scholarship:
After I gave a presentation to Humanities faculty about this new digital publishing “platform”, the chair of French Dept contacted me. She had vast quantities of primary materials and footnotes that she had wanted the publisher to put into her new monograph but they could not do this. ScholarWorks provided the answer by supplying the website for the extensive materials and the publisher connected to that url both from its website and from within the book.
