2 Early Life Birth name: McKinley Morganfield
Born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi Lost his mother at the age of 3; raised by his grandmother Muddy Waters (nickname) given during childhood

3 Early Influences Began playing harmonica at the age of 13; 4 years later he took up the guitar Major influences were Son House and Robert Johnson Style was classified as Delta Blues Characterized by bottleneck style and the jagged, pulsating rhythms Lyrics were dark, harsh, expressive, told of real life Singers sang in a pain-filled manner

4 Transitioning Moved to Chicago in 1943
Worked as a truck driver while trying to make it as a musician His song “I can’t be satisfied” launched the Chicago blues scene

5 His place in history… Ranked #17 on Rolling Stone’s list of Greatest artists of all time His song “Rollin’ Stone” inspired the name for The Rolling Stones Inspiration for: Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, Otis Rush, and many more Why was he important?? Helped bring blues out of the farm house and into the clubs and onto the radio Moved the Delta blues style out of Mississippi Began Chicago blues Inspired the British beat explosion of the 60’s
