2 Using commercially available sound meters, we have devised a method for noise data collection.

3 Royal Docks area in London Noise Map
The London Noise Map depicts areas around LCA as quiet! It only takes into consideration noise generated by traffic and does not reflect the ambient noise levels that communities are exposed to. Source-

4 Noise Mapping Survey Sheet
This data collection sheet (with the final design by Christian Nold) includes perceptions and feelings about the noise.

5 186 (3min) Readings over 7 weeks (558 individual 1 minute readings)
Total number of Points 186 Average over 65 dBA 65 34.9% Average over 60 dBA 107 57.5% Daytime readings (7am-7pm) 117 62.9% Evening readings (7pm-11pm) 42 22.6% Night readings (11pm-7am) 26 14.0% Daytime readings over 65 dBA 55 47.0% Daytime readings over 60 dBA 85 72.6% Evening readings over 65 dBA 10 24.4% evening readings over 60 dBA 19 46.3% Night readings over 65 dBA Night readings over 60 dBA 1 5.9% January Provides results that should not just be dismissed as anecdotal

6 Distribution of Survey Points

7 100m Square - Averages Numbers indicate how Many readings in each
Average readings were calculated within each 100m square Numbers indicate how Many readings in each 100m square

8 Operational Hours Non-Operational Hours Numbers indicate how
Many readings in each 100m square

9 Other sources of noise were recorded but aircraft related noise was the predominant source

10 A different visualisation that depicts clusters where noise levels are deemed acceptable <60dbA and cluster where there is a general consensus that levels exceeding 60dbA are perceived as annoying.

11 Comparable sound perceptions from Royal Docks and Pepys Estate in Deptford, Lewisham.

12 Graph shows data collected from March through to April this year (2010); the difference in terms of noise levels during normal flight operations at both Heathrow and LCA, and during a period of no flights. Levels rarely exceed 55dBA Photo taken from Wikimedia

13 The Royal Docks Community map has recently been used by community members to record the levels of noise they are being exposed to

14 Some of the readings and comments that have been added to the map.
