Corporate Culture – refers to an organizations traditions, values and unwritten norms It contains “hidden values” that affect who succeeds and who fails to succeed Corporate leaders groom workers they believe to be “ just like them” for upper jobs

They receive better access to information, networking, and fast track positions – resulting in better performance and higher commitment Outsiders are provided with limited resources and perform at lower standards and are less committed These “hidden values” create a self fulfilling prophecy, perpetuating the Iron Law of Oligarchy

Efforts to develop rather than impede human potential Humanized work settings: Offer opportunities based on abilities and contributions rather than personal characteristics They distribute power more equally Have fewer rigid rules More open decision making

Examples of Humanizing Work Settings
Quality circles – workers meet with managers to improve working conditions and the product Employee Stock ownership Plans – stock discounts given to workers from salary Work Teams – self managed work teams create ideas and solutions to problems Corporate daycare – provide child care for employees who need daycare

Cooperatives An alternate organizational form with no all powerful hierarchy Owned by members who collectively; make decisions determine goals Evaluate resources Set salaries Assign tasks Economics results mixed – some more profitable some less profitable
