1 Asexual Reproduction

2 General Information Asexual Information
One individual produces offspring that are genetically identical to itself. DOES NOT INCLUDE GAMETES (SEX CELLS) Many invertebrates use asexual reproduction to produce offspring.

3 Binary Fission The separation of organism into two new organisms
VERY similar to mitosis! No nucleus = some differences Origin of replication Septum

4 Budding An offspring grows out/off of the body of the parent.

5 Fragmentation/Regeneration
The body of the parent breaks into distinct pieces, each of which can produce an offspring.

6 Parthenogenesis Development of an egg that has not been fertilized into an individual

7 Benefits Do not have to waste energy/time finding a mate.
Do not have to produce gametes. Allows animals to be stationary (remain in one place) Produce numerous offspring.

8 Disadvantages A disadvantage of this type of reproduction is the lack of genetic variation. All of the organisms are genetically identical and therefore share the same weaknesses. If the stable environment changes, the consequences could be deadly to all of the individuals.
