Juxtaposition When two contrasting things, ideas, words, or sentence elements are placed next to each other for comparison.

Juxtaposition Example
In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the juxtaposition of light and darkness is repeatedly used. “O she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night”

Logos Logos refers to the use of reason as a controlling principle in an argument in rhetorical writing, authors often try to persuade readers by appealing to their sense of logic or reason.

Logos Example In MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech logos is used through his bad check analogy where a metaphoric check has come back marked “insufficient funds”.

Metaphor A metaphor is a figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared directly usually for emphasis or dramatic effect.

Metaphor Example Metaphor in Avengers “An ant has no quarrel with a boot.”

Metonymy Metonymy is a figure of speech in which something is referred to by using the name of something that is associated with it.

Metonymy Example An example of metonymy is in Single Ladies by beyonce
“If you like it then you should've put a ring on it.”
