By law, Church of England = state church Anglican safe-haven for England’s Roman Catholic minority The Act of Religious Tolerance was passed in 1649 Due to the Protestant majority, the Religious Tolerance Act was repealed in 1654 Protestant Revolution of 1689 Outlawed Catholicism Catholics had secret masses Didn’t become religiously tolerant again until the declaration was signed Anglicans Puritans Catholics Quakers Anglicans, Puritans, Catholics, and Quakers was common in the early years, and Puritan rebels briefly seized control of the province. Anglicanism is often called the "via media" or "middle way" between Catholicism and Protestantism. By popular demand, Maryland became a religious tolerant colony (to attract people/solve conflict).
