2. Safety in the Science Classroom
Objectives:
Understand how to act in order to prevent accidents or emergency situations from occurring.
Understand how to react to any accidents or emergency situations if they arise. 2

4. Dress & Attire Safety goggles/apron
Goggles protect your EYES, not your forehead/chin!
Remove goggles only when your teacher tells you!
Tie/pin back long hair.
Avoid long, loose sleeves on lab day.
Hoodies/sweaters/scarves are not allowed on lab days.
Shoes MUST be closed.
Tennis shoes/boots
No backpacks
Every day - Bring only what you need for class. 4

5. A Careful Scientist... Doesn’t horseplay!
Doesn’t throw, toss, kick, or flick materials!
Clears his/her table off before beginning the activity.
Only keeps the things needed
Allows for more room to work
Decreases the chance of an accident 5

6. A Careful Scientist... Checks/cleans equipment BEFORE and AFTER using
Make sure glassware is in good condition.
Never pick up broken glass.
Report broken glass to teacher!
Glass goes into a specific container and NOT the trashcan.
Only puts appropriate materials into the sink!
HINT: If it will not dissolve, DO NOT put it down the sink!!! 6

7. A Careful Scientist...
Works with his/her own group and doesn’t bother his/her neighbor’s experiment
Why might this be important?!
Eats at lunch and FLEX (but never during a lab!) 7

8. In case of fire… STOP, DROP, AND ROLL NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER RUN!
Know the location of a fire extinguisher and fire blanket! 8

9. Handling Chemicals Only handle chemicals under direction of teacher.
Keep hands away from your face during the activity.
If chemicals are spilled on clothing or skin, WASH IMMEDIATELY with large quantities water! This dilutes (washes) the chemical away.
Always wash hands after handling chemicals. 9

10. Handling Chemicals Never TASTE a chemical Never INHALE a chemical
If asked to smell a chemical, use WAFTING.
Never put materials back into a container unless permission is given first from the teacher.
This prevents cross-contamination! 10

11. In the case of an accident
Report any accident, injury, or incorrect procedure to your teacher AT ONCE, no matter how small the accident or injury! 11

12. When the activity is over…
Clean the work area
Check for loose equipment and spilled liquids
Turn the water off
Unplug electrical connections
Return materials to where they belong
Clean your equipment so it is ready for the next class

14. Safety Scenarios
#1 – The teacher was not in the room yet. Jake began weighing chemicals and touching them with his hands. His nose itched, so he rubbed it.
#2 – Heather and Jennifer were absent the day before when the investigation was discussed. They gathered materials and watch their classmates to see what to do, not taking time to read the directions.
#3 – Sam picked up the lab tray that had chemicals. He did not put on his safety goggles because he was already wearing glasses.
#4 – Cindy broke a beaker. Carefully, she picked up pieces with one hand and placed them in her other hand. She then dumped the glass pieces into the wastebasket.
#5 – Mike and Colleen had a lot of chemical left from their investigation, so they dumped it back into the original containers.
#6 – Diana and Mike were going to be late to their next class. After rushing to put away a few materials, they left the rest of the materials on the lab table.
