Terms of the day: monopoly: (n) to have exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade of a good or service Commerce: (n) activity of buying and selling Unprecedented: (adj) Never before seen After your map quiz… Please put your quiz in the front bin. The next dynasty we will be studying is the Han Dynasty. One of the greatest accomplishments of the Han Dynasty was the creation of a major trade route known as the Silk Road. How could the establishment of this trade route benefit China politically, culturally, and economically?

3 Our Goals Objectives Essential Questions SWBAT map the exchange of goods and ideas & the migration of people along the Silk Road in order to evaluate its impact on the East, the Middle East, & the West. How does the exchange of goods influence cultures? What impact did the Silk Road have on the East, Middle East, and West?

4 What was the Silk Road? Silk Road: Name given to the trade route established during the Han Dynasty that connected China, Central Asia, and Western Europe (known as Byzantium or the Byzantine Empire)

5 Silk Road Simulation Goal: How does the exchange of goods influence cultures? Task: As a Chinese trader, you are going to travel along the Silk Road on your quest for luxury goods, which you exchange for silk. China has a monopoly on silk production, so many people are eager to trade their luxury goods for your silk. CAUTION! The Silk Road was beginning to be developed under the Han dynasty. However, we need to examine its long-term impact upon Chinese society. As such, we are going to look the trade route over the course of its 2,000 years. This means we are going touch upon civilizations, such as the Islamic Middle East, whose creation we will return to.

10 Timeline: History in Context
Qin Dynasty – 221 BCE – 210 BCE Han Dynasty: 206 BCE – 220 CE

11 How did the Han dynasty rise to power?
Years following Shi Huangdi’s death  civil war in China Liu Bang centralized leadership & moved decidedly away from legalist practices – established Han Dynasty in 206 BCE Grandson Wudi continued grandfather’s practices but expanded China further, almost to modern size, through war

12 Social Characteristics of Han China
Confucianism’s Five relationships impacted social hierarchy Feudalism: Power based on division of land Emperor at the top, followed by kings who governed portions of territory (more power than during the Qin) Farmers, artisans, etc. owned land = feudal lords Those who worked for them, but did not own land, subservient (obedient) to them Slaves were the lowest class Patriarchy: Men > Women Women’s duty was to be subservient to men (obedient, submissive)

13 The Han Dynasty: Politics
Expanded ancient Chinese empire to size of modern China largely through war Recreated a bureaucracy (organized government) based on Confucianism, which became official state philosophy in 136 BCE – R- E-S-P-E-C-T! Government’s duty was to serve & respect people’s needs; people’s duty was to be subservient and honorable/respectful to government

14

15 Politics of Han China Confucianism emphasized education  Civil Service Examination meant government officials must pass test to work in government Merit System: Achievement/position based on merit (worth) rather than who you know or what family you were born into

16 The Han Dynasty: Culture
Issued standardized coinage Emphasized Confucianism & respect for authority, ancestors, and the state Developed paper-making process & wrote on scrolls Created a 365-Day Calendar (~300 years before the Maya) Developed the junk design of ship: allowed sailing on high seas due to rudder system Invented the wheelbarrow ~150 BCE

17 The Han Dynasty & Development of the Silk Road
Silk Road: Name given to the trade route established during the Han Dynasty that connected China, Central Asia, and Western Europe (known as Byzantium or the Byzantine Empire) What was once the path of nomadic herders/traders became a unified trading route often protected by various countries

18 The Han Dynasty & Development of the Silk Road
Named the Silk Road after China’s monopoly on the luxury item of silk; silk in high demand in European markets Gender roles: women were largely in charge of the production of silk While the economic focus of the Silk Road was upon luxury goods, it, nevertheless, marked unprecedented interactions between cultures spanning from Europe to Asia  cultural diffusion: the exchange of ideas between cultures across geographic areas

19 What is Buddhism? One of the most significant contributions TO Chinese society as a result of the Silk Road was the spread of the religion: Buddhism Buddhism = offshoot of Hinduism originated in Northern India & spread to China Belief system based upon the life of a prince named Siddartha Gautama (later “the Buddha”)
