1 10-4 Acceleration Notes

2 Acceleration describes how velocity changes over time.

3 Ex. 1: Speeding up When you push the accelerator, the speed of the car gets faster and faster. This is positive acceleration.

4 Ex. 2: Slowing Down By pushing the brake, the speed of the car gets slower and slower. This is sometimes called deceleration.

5 Equation: Acceleration = Change in Velocity Change in Time

6 Free fall Does everything fall at the same rate?

7 Free fall is constant acceleration due to earth’s gravitational pull.
Objects will accelerate to the earth gaining a speed of 10 m/s every second.

9 Horizontal (x direction) Ex. walking Vertical (y direction) Ex. Free fall How fast? v = d/t V = a*t How far? d = v*t d = ½ g*(t^2) How long? t = d/v
