MSI Faculty Positions Occur through statement of affiliation, college or joint college positions, endowments, or Provost initiative Academic homes on main campus Unique duties Transformative (high-touch) educational programs Transdisciplinary research Academic home on campus is similar to Cascades or other off-campus faculty (Extension, HMSC, Experiment Stations) These positions will be different
4
MSI Faculty Success Unique responsibilities need to be captured in positions descriptions with clear expectations for P&T. Faculty mentoring should include categories outlined by the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (mentoring map). Unit P&T committees should include other MSI faculty. High-touch teaching is more time consuming and requires greater level of expertise; transdisciplinary research may be more time consuming and lead to more co-authored papers and co-PI grants than typical—these differences need to be addressed in PDs Concern regarding success for these new type of faculty, especially among units that do not have experience with off-campus faculty.

MSI Organizational Structure
VP or Director Associate Director, Research Associate Director, Academic Programs Head Advisor, Marine Studies First Year Experience Advisor Additional Advisors 1 FTE/300 majors Internship/ Experiential Learning Coordinator Graduate Program Advisor/ Coordinator Student Support Services Associate Director, Outreach and Engagement Hatfield Marine Science Center Uncertain how current structure of HMSC fits within MSI from perspective of reporting structure. Titles (VP vs Director) are hypothetical titles—the functions of the positions are more important than what they are called. Positions/functions in italics would be added as initiative scales up

Recommendations Develop MOUs between academic units for each MSI faculty member with a joint appointment. Senior Vice-Provost for Academic Affairs offer leadership training that specifically addresses leading units composed of faculty at different locations and with very different position descriptions. Differences in accomplishments and norms from typical academic appointments need to be embraced, supported and acknowledged in MSI faculty position descriptions, and specific outcomes for promotion and tenure should be identified. Provost Office monitor these hires in a manner similar to the recent Provost Initiative hires. Administrators will need to develop mentoring and career development support that will ensure faculty success.
