1 converting Fractions, Decimals, and percentages
Today’s lesson . . . What: converting Fractions, Decimals, and percentages Why: To convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages. How: By actively participating in lesson and practice, and by completing homework. We will answer some key essential questions . . . (next slides)

2 How are fractions, decimals, and percentages similar?

3 How do you convert between percentages and decimals?

4 How do you convert decimals to fractions?

5 Prior Knowledge/ Vocabulary:
A proper FRACTION represents a part out of a larger whole ( πŸ• 𝟏𝟎 means 7 out of 10 ). A PERCENT represents a part out of one-hundred (35% means 35 out of one-hundred). A DECIMAL number also represents the relationship between a whole number and its parts. (3.25 means 3 wholes and 25-hundredths of a whole).

6 Visual Example: 𝟐 πŸ‘

7 On a Number Line: Fraction: Percent: Decimal: 70% πŸ• 𝟐𝟎 0.95

8 part Fractions, decimals, and percentages
ALL represent ______________ of a whole. Because they can all be used to represent the same value, we can CONVERT between them whenever we want to! part

9 Move decimal point 2 spaces to the __________!
Converting Decimals and Percentages: Decimal to Percent: Move decimal point 2 spaces to the __________! Percent to Decimal: right Decimal to % (D to P) Example: 0.125 = 12.5% left % to Decimal (P to D) Example: 5% = 0.05

10 Practice: DECIMAL PERCENT 1. 35% 2. 0.6 3. 4% 4. 4.8 5. 6.2% 6. .035
Together: DECIMAL PERCENT 1. 35% 3. 4% 5. 6.2%

11 0.08 0.9% 4.29 525% 0.565 20% Practice: Your Turn: DECIMAL PERCENT 1.
8% 3. 429% 5. 56.5% 0.08 0.9% 4.29 525% 0.565 20%

12 BRAIN BREAK!! β€œSmart Move” Exercise

13 Use Decimal Language to READ IT, WRITE IT, REDUCE IT!
Converting Decimals to Fractions: Use Decimal Language to READ IT, WRITE IT, REDUCE IT! Can you fill-in-the-blanks with the correct place-value names? 1, tens ones tenths thousands hundreds hundredths thousandths ten-thousandths Who can say above # in β€œDecimal Language”?

14 Practice: 0.04 Four- hundredths _________________________________ Three and two-tenths_____________________________ 3.2 _______________________________________________ ________________________________________________ β€œZero and one-thousandth” (or β€œone-thousandth” ) β€œForty-five and one-tenth”

15 Think about decimal language!
Read it, Write it, Reduce it! Think about decimal language! Convert the following decimal #’s into fractions. Remember, if you can say the decimal #’s in your head (using decimal language)– you can write the decimal as a fraction! READ IT, WRITE IT, REDUCE IT! PRACTICE: 1) 2) 3) Since the β€œ5” is in the β€œhundredths” spot on a place-value chart, we would say this out-loud as . . . β€œFive-hundredths” This helps us to write the fraction. ANSWER: πŸ“ 𝟏𝟎𝟎 or 𝟏 𝟐𝟎 4 10 = 𝟐 πŸ“ 3 𝟐 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 3 𝟏 πŸ“πŸŽ

16 Read it, Write it, Reduce it!
Continued: Read it, Write it, Reduce it! 4) 4.03 5) 0.002 6) 0.0035 4 πŸ‘ 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝟐 𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 = 𝟏 πŸ“πŸŽπŸŽ πŸ‘πŸ“ 𝟏𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 = πŸ• 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟎

21 Wrap-it-up (Summary) :
After today’s lesson, let’s use our notes to answer the essential questions . . . How are fractions, decimals, and percentages similar? They all represent parts of a whole!

22 Wrap-it-up (Summary) :
After today’s lesson, let’s use our notes to answer the essential questions . . . How do you convert between percentages and decimals? Move the decimal point 2 SPACES either to the LEFT OR to the RIGHT!! Use the alphabet to remember which way.
