John Smith eventually made his way to America to help govern the British colony of Jamestown. After allegedly being saved from death by Pocahontas, he established trading agreements with native tribes. Squanto, was a Native American of the Patuxet tribe who acted as an interpreter and guide to the Pilgrim settlers at Plymouth during their first winter in the New World. William Penn was the son of an admiral and landowner. He converted to the Quaker religion and was jailed several times for his resistance to the Church of England. In 1681, he received a royal charter to form a new colony in America which he named Pennsylvania.

5 choose Olaudah Equiano Anne Hutchinson Patrick Henry
Olaudah Equiano wrote an autobiography about his life, which recounts being kidnapped from Africa as a child and sold into slavery. He bought his freedom and became part of the abolition movement. Anne Hutchinson was born in Alford, England. Growing up, she learned from her father to question the religious teachings of the Church. In 1634, Hutchinson and her husband followed Protestant Minister John Cotton to Massachusetts Bay Colony. There, she shared her own interpretations of Cotton’s teachings. Tried by the General Court and interrogated by Governor John Winthrop, Hutchinson was found guilty of heresy and banished. Henry was an influential leader in the radical opposition to the British government, but only accepted the new federal government after the passage of the Bill of Rights, for which he was in great measure responsible.
