CERAMIC Wall Vase WSRHS Ceramics 1

Unit Objectives… Demonstrate the ability to make independent decisions determining proper tools and techniques to use for successful execution of various forms. Understand the use and importance of textural qualities in clay. Apply various construction techniques to successfully create a ceramic wall vase (pocket).

Purpose… Create a vase that can be hung from a wall.
The SIZE and SHAPE are to be determined by students, but must be practical. The slab piece (base) must have a way to be mounted to a wall. The vase components are built out from the base slab. Must demonstrate a knowledge of slab construction, its properties as well as textural possibilities.

Slab Construction… Template – I encourage you to create a template that can be cut out and used to cut the shape out of clay slabs. Decorative pieces can be mounted with slip to the wall vase slabs. Carved motifs are easy to use for decoration.

Slab Construction… Slab: Clay evenly rolled, formed by draping or joining. Roll clay out on a cloth or wedging board between two battens. Occasionally turn the clay which becomes easier to work with. The cloth absorbs moisture – monitor it as you work.

Slab Construction… Before assembly, check that all slabs are the same size and match the base. The corner joints work best if cut at an angle (beveled or mitered) and coated with slip. For the sake of stability, corner joints should be placed between slaps. TEXTURE – don’t forget how important it is to use texture.
